Esta fue la primera consola aparecida tras el éxito de la Game Boy.

Creada incialmente por la empresa Taiwanesa Bit Corporation y distribuida por otras como Alston Research en USA, Cheetah Marketing en el Reino Unido, y la empresa de juguetes GIG en Italia.

Bit Corp. cerró en 1992 pero UMC y su subsidiaria Funtech siguieron produciendo hardware y software para la Gamate.
